Abstract

The aim of this study
- determine the depicting styles, and to classify the different stages and representations of the Coptic Scenes, and to analyze Coptic wall paintings dating back to the late third/early fourth to the eleventh century A.D. from the Coptic museum collection.
Conclusion
The Coptic artist inherited many symbols from their predecessors and his local environment with the addition of new features and elements and used them side by side with the christian symbols. These christin symbols were derived from the OT and NT stories.
The Coptic artist mixed the biblical objects with the predecessors’ symbols and the same canonical proportions used by the ancient Egyptian artists continued, as the poses representing the faces and the feet in profile while the shoulders in a frontal position like Al Bagawat’s chapels, according to these different effects, though the Greek, Roman, Syria, Byzantine or Ancient Egyptian, shared all in the emergence of Coptic art in Egypt, that adopted and used all of these items then formed them by his christian soul and civilized Egyptian heritage in a special style, thus it had an independent character, special formation and particular traits.
Many similarities between the ancient Egyptian and the Coptic art like the choice of their topics and the style. Nilotic scenes and hunting scenes were considered most of the familiar scenes which continued during the Coptic period, but with some changes for example the hunter holding his pear, the geometrical patterns and nature like using lotus plant, the palms , grapes, appearance of the trees or acanthus leaves while swaying with air, fishes and birds in the nest with eggs, fish hunting was depicted on walls of the tomb of the nobles since the 5th –18th Dynasty, also, the sarcastic scenes continued to be used like the ancient ancestor with little different details but give the needed meaning.
The Hellenistic influence clearly found in the personification of the seas and rivers like the personification of the Red Sea in the shape of a solider with sward, and from the ancient Egyptian personification of the viruses in shape of persons as the personification of Justice, holding the scale as the goddess Maat and the personification of peace in shape of women holding ankh cross and the scepter symbol of Osiris. The Hellenistic effects appeared through the use of the written words in the identification of his different personalities and events.
Finally, it could be said that the Coptic art has its own traits and multiple characters that functioned the ancient or the creative artistic works with their signs, themes, and styles in a new function and different vision to serve the society, or it could be described as a perfect and mature art.
