Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to study one of the basic forms of the sentence, which is its negated form. In this research we shall conduct a contrastive study between the Korean negated sentence and the Arabic negated sentence. Its main aim is to find the similarities and differences between the two languages, in its negated form.
This study will aid both Korean language students and Arabic language students in their studies. By finding the differences and similarities between the structures of the two languages’ negated form, it will help language students and researchers in understanding both languages’ nature.
Although both languages originate from different language family, we aim to prove via this study that no matter how far two languages can be, they will always have common grounds.
This research is divided into eight chapters. Chapter one, the introduction in which we shall mention its purpose, importance, theory, method and major preceding studies.
Chapter two discusses dictionaries’ meaning of each of the word ‘affirm’ and ‘negate’ in both the Korean and Arabic language. The third chapter is devoted to the definition of the expression ‘negated sentence’ according to scientists. The fourth chapter discusses the types of negation in the Korean language. Followed by the fifth chapter, it discusses the types of negation in the Arabic language. Then in the sixth chapter we compare between the types of negation in Korean and Arabic language. We aim to find morphological, syntactic and semantic differences and similarities between the negated sentences in Korean and Arabic.
We then try to prove our findings by applying them on the Arabic novel ‘Yaqoubian’s building’in the seventh chapter. This novel is an Arabic novel that is translated to Korean. We aim to analyze the negated sentence in both versions of the novel and how the negated sentences are translated and whether or not they were translated as they are or not in order to confirm our previous findings.
Finally, we re-arrange our findings in the conclusion in which we shall re-confirm our theories and findings.
Keywords: negation, contrastive study, negated sentence, Arabic, Korean.
