Abstract

Studies on the effects of extracts of two plants; black pepper (Piper nigrum) and Hungarian chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) on different instars of 0 nubi/alis were carried out. Four solvents (petroleum ether, chloroform, acetone and water) were successively used for extraction, and three concentrations of each; 5, I 0 and 15% were tested. Observations were made on mortality, change in body weight as toxicological measures of efficiency. Also, the effects of treatment on glucose level, total protein content, total lipid content, albumin concentration, ALP level were detennined.
The 3rd and 4th larval instarswere found more sensitive than the 5th instar. The water and petroleum ether proved to be the most effective solvents. The larvae treated with the P. nigrum extracts showed higher mortality than those treated with theM chamomi/la extracts. Multiple application was more effective than one application. There is a positive relation between the mortality percent and the concentration of the extracts used as well as with time after treatment.
