Abstract

The present study comprised 60 randomly selected cases of primary colorectal adenocarcinomas which were obtained from the archives of histopathological laboratories of Minia University Hospital and Minia Oncology Center (in the period between April 2012 and November 2016). The cases included; 46 cases of conventional adenocarcinomas, 12 cases of mucinous adenocarcinomas and 2 cases of signet ring cell carcinomas. The grade of differentiation in conventional adenocarcinoma was low grade in 36 cases and high grade in 10 cases.
We studied the immunohistochemical expression of galectin-3 in colorectal cancer tissues and its association with different clinicopathological data.
Regarding cytoplasmic galectin-3 expression, 39 cases (65%) showed high expression, and there was a statistically highly significant association with histological type (P= 0.003). Most of conventional adenocarcinoma cases (76.1%) showed high expression, whereas 66.7% of mucinous adenocarcinoma cases showed negative/low expression. The two cases of signet ring cell carcinoma were negative.
We found a statistically significant positive associations between cytoplasmic galectin-3 expression and lymph node metastasis (P= 0.036) and advanced tumor stage assessed by both TNM staging (P= 0.014) and modified Dukes staging (P= 0.035). The majority of stage III tumors (78.6%) and tumors positive for nodal metastasis (78.6%) showed high expression.
Regarding grade of differentiation in conventional adenocarcinoma, we found that 75% of low grade cases showed high expression while 80% of high grade cases showed high expression but the differences were statistically insignificant (P= 0.553).
No significant associations were found between cytoplasmic galectin-3 expression and other clinicopathological features as patients’ age, sex, tumor localization, tumor size or tumor infiltrating lymphocytes.
