Abstract

Quality of health education in primary health care units can be defined to include characteristics such as efficiency, efficacy, effectiveness, equity, accessibility, comprehensiveness, acceptability, timeliness, appropriateness, continuity, privacy and confidentiality. Other attributes that have been used to describe quality of health education in primary health care units include provisions of education for the mother and family about pertinent health issues, inclusion of the mother and family in treatment planning, decision-making, and mother satisfaction (Hailu and Abajobir, 2015).
Mothers’ satisfaction has long been considered as an important component when measuring health outcome and quality of care in both developed and developing countries and constitutes a significant indicator of the health care quality (Nicolelliss, 2015).
Therefore, mothers’ satisfaction is considered as an important measure to evaluate the quality of health education and can predict both compliance and utilization. The function of health care services is to improve the health status of the population so the stakeholders in health are conscious about the reforms in the healthcare system globally in order to enhance mother satisfaction with healthcare services, so the restructuring of health systems running all over the world concentrated on the ways to increase mothers’ satisfaction (Ladds, 2013).
Aim of the study:-
Was to assess quality of health education provided for mothers in
primary health care units, through:
1. Identifying health educators’ knowledge about health education process
2. Assessing health educators’ practice toward health education process
3. Assessing mothers’ satisfaction regarding quality of health education
Research questions:
1. Is there a relation between health educators’ socio-demographic characteristics and their knowledge?
2. Is there a relation between health educators’ socio-demographic characteristics and their practice?
3. Is there a relation between health educators knowledge and mothers satisfaction about quality of health education?
Research design:
Descriptive analytical study was utilized to conduct the study.
Technical design:
A-Setting
The study was conducted in primary health care units in Itsa city at El-Fayoum Governorate/ Egypt, as this city has the largest number of primary health care units which represent 40 PHCUs.
B-Subjects:
Purposive sample of 300 health educators working with mothers in primary health care units was selected from the previous mentioned setting
A representative sample of 100 mothers attending health education classes in the biggest rural health unit in Itsa City, Qalamshah village.
C-Tools for data collection:
Tool one:
An interviewing questionnaire was developed by the investigator, it included four parts:
A-Socio-demographic data of health educators.
B–Health educators’ knowledge assessment questionnaire regarding health education process.
C –Socio-demographic data for mothers.
D–Assessment of mothers’ satisfaction about health education sessions.
Tool two:
An observation check list tool to assess the following parts
1- Health educator’s performance in health education process.
2- Health education room as regarding (ventilation- lightness- appropriateness for the objectives of the program- cleanliness- furniture- break period- control of noise)
Pilot study:
A pilot study was carried out on 10% of the expected total sample size. it was carried out to test the applicability of the constructed tools and the clarity of the included questions, the pilot has also served to estimate the time needed for each subject to fill in the questions. According to the pilot, some correction such as rephrasing and added questions were performed as needed. The pilot’s participants were not included in the main study sample.
The study results can be summarized as follow:
64% of health educators their age more than or equal to 35 years old while, 98% of participants were female, 91% were married, 92% of health educators had diploma degree, 30% of them had > or equal to 20 years of experience.
85% of health educators had satisfactory level of knowledge about characteristics of health educator while 50% of health educators had satisfactory level of knowledge about evaluation method of health education
72% of the study sample had barriers related to them as a health educator and 48% of health educators had barrier related to teaching methods.
63.3% of mothers received health education about pregnancy ,58.3% of mothers received health education session in PHCU 86.7% of health education sessions were held by nurses and only 3.3% of them were held by physicians.
85% of mothers were satisfied about educational material while 20% of them were satisfied about health educators and publications.
79% of health educators had correctly done level of practice about health education methods, planning and implementation, knowledge about content, and activities related to health education sessions.
There was a significant difference in the level of knowledge according to education level, marital status and years of experience.
There was statistical significant difference in the practice level according to age, education level, and marital status.
