Abstract

hormone in pre-eclamptic patients and the relation to body mass index and fetal biometery. The study includes 53patients in third trimester of pregnancy and labour .twenty three were pre-eclamptic and thirty were normal pregnant women.
Patients with chronic diseases, multiple pregnancy or pre mature rupture of membrane were excluded from the study .
Body mass index was calculated for all patient and ultrasound examination was done to estimate gestational age , and fetal weight.
Leptin assay was done by obtaining 5 ml of peripheral venous blood from both groups under strict aseptic measures. Each sample was labeled with patient’s name and identification number. Blood samples were transferred immediately to chilled siliconized glass tubes containing Na2 EDTA (1mg/ml) which was centrifuged and then stored at -20°C until assayed. Total circulating leptin concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA).
Our study had shown that serum leptin levels were significantly higher in in pre-eclamptic women when compared with normal pregnant women.
A positive correlation was found between serum leptin and body mass index, but insignificant.
In the present study, there was a negative relationship between the fetal birth weight and maternal serum leptin levels. This was mainly due to high resistance in blood flow to fetus as improper trophoplastic invasion in pre-eclampsia .
Finally maternal serum leptin level may be the marker of inadequate trophoblastic invasion of spiral arterioles in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and may help in diagnosis of etiology of pre-eclampsia. Maternal serum leptin level may be good indicator to expect of fetal weight in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia This work was conducted to study leptin .
