Abstract

Water resources management in Qarun and Wadi El Rayyan Lakes, and their surroundings, in Fayoum governorate are an issue of very high significance because of great socio-cultural, ecological and economic values. The study attempts to develop an integrated water resources management model for the Fayoum Basin, In order to understand the situation in the whole basin and identify the problems exist and the weakness that affect the basin and their improvement. The amount of water entering the Qarun Lake exceeds the amount of water withdrawn from it and the evaporated water from it, which leads to continuous rise of the levels, as well as the high rate of salinity due to the accumulation of salts coming with agricultural drainage water. On the other hand, the lack of water destined for the lakes of Wadi El Rayyan caused a decrease in the levels of the lakes, especially the second lake, where the level deteriorated rapidly with the doubling of salinity, which threatens the continuation of agricultural, tourism and fishing activities. A number of scenarios were proposed to restore the water and salt balance again. These proposals represent only a regulatory process and rearrangement of the mixing stations on the Wadi Drain and the Makshofa channel, without increasing the burden on the Fayoum irrigation system. It has been proposed to add a new evaporation ponds to Lake Qarun in the northeast of the lake of area (20.48 to 27.24 km2) to withdraw the excess saltwater annually. A simulation of the lake was carried outby the SOBEK program, with the withdrawal of different amounts of water for the new evaporation ponds. The simulation of different water scenarios concluded that the new ponds could reduce the level of Lake Qarun by about12.4 to 17.9 cm annually. In addition, evaporation ponds have a significant effect in reducing the salinity of Lake Qarun by about 0.91 to 1.33 gm/lit annually. On the other side of the Fayoum depression, several scenarios were proposed to solve the problems of Wadi El Rayyan lakes by increasing the quantities of water entering the Rayyan Tunnel. After simulating the proposed scenarios on the SOBEK program, water levels increased with relative stability of salinity in the two lakes, but this proposal is not suitable for reclamation of new land or adding fish farms.A proposed work has been done to reduce the losses of evaporation from the second lake by reducing its surface area. It was concluded that the southern part of the lake is shallower, higher in temperature and evaporation rates than the northern part. The proposal was to separate this part of the lake by establishing earth bank, so that the lake would be reduced to 60% of the original area. A simulation of the previous scenarios was carried out after the establishment of the earth bank. It was concluded that the amount of water added to the lake increases the levels of the two lakes with relative stability in the salinity rate of all scenarios with the possibility of adding new land of 4000 feddans and expanding the fish farm by 1400 feddans.
