Abstract
The transition period (3 weeks before parturition to 3 weeks after parturition) is considered one of the most important & most dangerous periods in the life of the animal .
So this study was conducted on 105 Holstein Friesian cows in the center of Abuhamad in Sharkia province, including 80 cows with different BCSduring the transitional period & 20 cows suffering from ketosis at the end of the transitional period after parturition.
This work was done to achieve the effect of some medicinal plants on different BCS as well as ketotic cows during this study , so that the cows were divided to experimental & field work .
The first experiment consisted of 40 cows in the transitional period with a moderate body condition of 3-4, divided into four groups: healthy control, a group supplied with milk thistle, a group supplied with thyme & a group supplied with garlic.
The previous herbs were added daily with ration for three weeks prepartum & three weeks postpartum .
Blood & serum samples were taken for analyzing four times : two times at three weeks & one week before parturition , then another two times at one week & three weeks after parturition .
The milk thistle grass showed the best results in comparison with thyme, garlic & control group , so it was preferred for another experiments.
Other 40 cows in the transitional period for the 2nd experiment , they were divided into two groups. 20 cows at body condition 4-4.5 divided into 10 control & 10 supplied with milk thistle.
