Abstract

Sea Level Rise (SLR) is one of the hottest issues that has been grabbing the world’s attention lately. It is considered as one of the certain impacts of the global warming phenomenon. Many other reasons, force the SL to rise over its coastal lands due to both natural and anthropogenic changes and the coastal zones are facing global climate stresses. It represents a huge constrain in the coastal zones. SLR has different scenarios and is expected to be rising with faster rates. It will cause many impacts on many types of the coastal regions; physical, social, economic and ecological impacts.
The world’s planners started to approach the coastal regions’ protection – from SLR – through resilience. As resilience is the only way that enables any system to bounce back after facing stresses and changes to reach an equilibrium state. To get what resilience is, we had to understand other approaches; mitigation, adaptation and resistance. The ability of transforming any coastal region to a coastal resilient region requires realizing resilience of the; physical, social, economic and ecological aspects. In addition to addressing the political situation and monitoring the quality of the strategic actions setting and its implementation.
Mediterranean area is facing current coastal problems due to SLR. Egyptian Northern Nile Delta is one of the most vulnerable zones in the Mediterranean area.
Many areas are subjected to be inundated, resulting in great loss of deltaic precious agricultural lands threatening the region’s built environment, community, economy and ecosystem causing instability of the whole community. Addressing coastal problems expected due to SLR, requires proactive long term intervention comprehensive plans. Solving coastal problems is considered a challenge as it requires an integration between long and short term plans. The problem is; Although coastal problems require long term solutions and comprehensive coastal policies, all the available coastal management plans are short termed and reactive to a sudden occurring problem. Political will and situation towards the environmental issues are the main incentive for having proactive strategies and comprehensive plans in dealing with SLR in Nile Delta.
Through conducted survey, interviews and spatial analysis, a group of recommened actions was offered by the end of the research that could be a starting step for solving the upcoming problems.
