This study introduced a new technique called Elastography, which allowed the evaluation of soft tissue by elastic deformations through application of compression to the area of interest, bearing in mind that the mechanical properties of the tissue are important indicators for the diagnosis of malignant lesions. Sonoelastography is a rich and rapidly developing technique that promises to improve diagnosis of many different lymph node diseases. As with most new technologies, diagnostic criteria and quality control mechanisms are still being established. In general, Elastography can improve the performance of sonography in the diagnosis of enlarged metastatic cervical lymph nodes and elastography has a bright future in detecting cervical lymphadenopathy, thereby improving the diagnosis and prognosis of head and neck cancer. Elastography is an effective, convenient technique that when added to grey scale ultrasound, helps to distinguish cancerous neck lymph nodes from benign ones. It improves ultrasound’s specificity by utilizing conventional ultrasound imaging to measure the compressibility and mechanical properties of a lesion. Since cancerous tumors tend to be stiffer than the surrounding healthy tissues, a more compressible lesion on elastography is less likely to be malignant.
