Abstract
Among the feminist poets of the idiosyncratic group are Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) and Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) who have gained some deserved esteem in contemporary America and elsewhere. Bishop’s brainpower helped her to write exceedingly skilled poems in an eloquent technique that includes unseen philosophical intensity. Rich’s works personify strong-tasting passions although she started her poetic genius by writing poems in a traditional form.
This dissertation aims to shed light on the idiosyncratic feminist American poetry, especially that of Elizabeth Bishop and Adrienne Rich. It will argue that the writings of the feminist poets, in the contemporary American scene, have surpassed an extraordinary range of political, cultural, and psychological obstacles, to occupy a positive and influential position. Women poets are no longer marginalized. The dissertation examines the difficulties encountered by the feminist poets especially Bishop and Rich as a part of idiosyncratic group. Hence the readers can evaluate their poetry and its role in their society.
The main argument of the dissertation is tackled in an Introduction, four Chapters, and a Conclusion. The Introduction paves the way for the dissertation as a whole, including its objective and explaining its methodology. The first chapter deals with the idiosyncratic feminist American poets. The second tackles the philosophical poems of Elizabeth Bishop. The third examines the emotional poetry of Adrienne Rich. The fourth chapter is an assessment of the two poets. The Conclusion summarizes the main findings of the study and sums up the outcomes of the discussions raised in the chapters. It explores new aspects of analysis assigned to the main issues of the study.
