Abstract

In the last decades, the utilization of the antibiotic increased in the treatment of bacterial diseases but these antibiotics have side effects on human. So, this current study aimed to the utilization of some essential oils instead of using antibiotics for treatment of pathogenic respiratory microorganisms by safe way and avoid the danger of increasing use of antibiotics.Fifty two bacterial isolates and six fungal isolates were collected from sputum of patients in Chest Department, Tanta University Hospital, Egypt. The isolates were tested for determination of the level of susceptibility to antibiotics, antifungal and to be compared with some essential oils. The results were summarized as following:Fifty two bacterial isolates were divided into (47) isolates Gram-negative bacilli and (5) Gram- positive cocci isolates. Among these bacterial isolates number E6, K1, Ps2, Pro1 and St4 were resistant to the fourteen tested antibiotics and susceptible for tested essential oils. These isolates were identified by biochemical tests and confirmatory tests. The isolate St 4 was identified as Staphylococcus aureus, the isolate Ps2. was Pseudomonas aeruginosa while isolate E 6 was Escherichia coli, also the isolate Pro1 was Proteus mirabilis finally, the isolate K1 was Klebsiella pneumoniae. A. niger, A. fumigatus and A. flavus were identified by 18S rRNA sequencing.Screening of the sensitivity of the multidrug resistant bacterial and fungal isolates to tested antibiotics whereas combined with different essential oils(cinnamon, clove, camphor, ginger and lavender) revealed that antibiotics combined with essential oils exhibited a synergetic effect against the resistant microbes.
