Abstract The present work is an attempt to elucidate a comprehensive knowledge for the deleterious effects of Aspartame as a major artificial sweetener in comparison with the widely used sucrose sweetener and the natural herb stevia sweetener. To attain this goal, a total number of 64 male albino rats were presently investigated. This involved different aspects of study namely physiological, biochemical, histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical changes on liver tissues for 30 and 90 days. Results were obtained from treated experimental animal groups and compared with the corresponding normal control group. The present findings were then discussed in view of the relevant literature available in similar fields of study. This study suggests the use of stevia as a natural zero calorie sweetener instead of the artificial sweetener aspartame in sugar containing foods and beverages for weight control. |
