Abstract A dropped weight impact for penetration resistance tests was performed on a special designed apparatus based on the NIJ Standard 0115.00. Stab resistance test was performed on the samples with multi-layers of ceramic nonwoven, glass woven and coated glass woven fabrics. Carbon, 2D and 3D glass woven fabrics and Polyester, Kevlar 29 and Vectran Triaxial fabrics were tested on puncture resistance test based on EN 388 standard. The failure mode of the fabrics was analyzed. Findings indicated that the material type affects the puncture resistance property of different fabrics. The contact pressure of fabric-probe was the main resistance during the puncture processes leading to the breakage of the fibers under penetration. The polyester/ glass Nanoparticles matrix has better puncture resistance property than ordinary polyester polymer matrix. The puncture resistance of polyester matrix was enhanced through the addition of a percentage of glass nanoparticles. The analysis of the results of the punching stress and the punching energy of the fabrics/polyester/glass Nanoparticles composite were enhanced due to the application of the hybrid polyester/glass Nanoparticles using 2.8% glass particle volume fraction. Various composite products are made of polyester polymers/ 2.8% glass nanoparticles volume fraction reinforced with Carbon, 2D and 3D glass woven fabrics and Polyester, Kevlar 29 and Vectran Triaxial fabrics. The effect of material type on puncture resistance was comparatively studied, as well. |
