Abstract

Pseudomonas aeuroginosa is an opportunistic pathogen causing severe, acute and chronic nosocomial infections in immunocompromised, catheterized or burn patients.
In this study, twenty one Pseudomonas aeuroginosa strains were isolated from nosocomially-infected patients in Suez Canal University Hospitals who were hospitalized in different wards to characterize these strains phenotypically, by the antibiotic resistance pattern, and genotypically by their plasmid profile pattern.
Multiple resistances to antimicrobial agents are now a common phenomenon which limits the usefulness of these agents in the treatment of infections. The antibiogram showed that all the isolates were Multi-Drug Resistant. All the isolates were resistant to Augmentin (Penicillins), Cefotaxime, Ceftazidime, Ceftriaxone, Cefipime (Cephalosporins), and Aztreonam (Monobactams). In addition 33.3 % of the isolates were resistant to both Ciprofloxacin (Quinolones) and Gentamycin (Aminoglycosides), and only 19 % showed resistance to imipinem. So, Carbanemes are still the drug of choice in MDR strains. In addition, all the isolates showed high MAR indices.
