Abstract

The study was conducted from June 2015 to June 2016 at Aswan heart center and Aswan university hospital. Our study population consisted of 60 children, who were planned for transcatheter closure of PDA and 60 control children.
Aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of PDA on the aortic stiffness index (ASI) and its relation with cardiac functions before and after transcatheter closure of PDA.
The main findings were:
1 Patients with PDA had significantly higher ASI than controls before closure . After closure, ASI decreased significantly , but still higher than controls at the six –month follow up evaluation.
2 Patients with PDA had significantly lower LVEF than controls before closure. After closure, LVEF significantly improved and there was no significant difference between patients and controls at the six –month follow up evaluation.
3 There was significant difference between patients and controls as regard LVEDD before closure. After closure, LVEDD significantly reduced, but still slightly higher than controls at six- month follow up evaluation.
4 Patients with PDA had significantly impairment in LV diastolic function more than controls before closure. After closure, LV diastolic function significantly improved, but still lower than control at six – month follow up evaluation.
5 There was significant positive correlation between PDA size and ASI before PDA closure
3 There was positive significant correlation between ASI and time delay of PDA closure
4 there was significant negative correlation between ASI and LVEF before PDA closure
5 there was significant positive correlation between ASI and LVEDD before closure
6 there was significant positive correlation between ASI and BNP
7 there was significant positive correlation between E/Ea ratio and ASI
8 there was significant positive correlation between ASI and PAP
9 There was significant negative correlation between PDA size and LVEF
10 there was significant positive correlation between PDA size and PAP
11 there was significant positive correlation between PDA size and BNP before PDA closure.
