Abstract The present investigation was carried out at the experimental farm of Sakha Agricultural Research Station (normal condition), Kafrel-Sheikh Governorate and El-Hosinia Agricultural Research Station (saline soil), El-Sharqia Governorate, Egypt during the two successive seasons 2014/15 and 2015/16. Seven lines and three testers of barley (Horduem vulgare, L.) were used. Lines and testers were crossed by line x tester mating design to give 21 top crosses. The lines, testers and 21 F1’s were sown in two experiments. Each parent and F1 was represented by two rows per replicate. Each row was 1.5 m long; spaces between rows were 30 cm with 15 cm between plants. Measurements comprised: days to heading (day), days to maturity (day), grain filling period (day), grain filling rate (g/day), plant height (cm), spike length (cm), number of grains/spike, number of spikes/plant, spike grain weight (g), 100–grain weight (g), grain yield/plant (g) and stress susceptibility index (SSI). The obtained data for each character were analyzed on plot mean basis. An ordinary analysis Line x Tester was performed according to Kempthorne (1957). Data of the studied traits were used to estimate the stress susceptibility index (SSI) as suggested by Fisther and Maurer (1978). |
