Abstract

Neonatal encephalopathy due to perinatal hypoxia ischemia (HI) is a devastating disease that is a main cause of mortality in infants. The disease can lead to long-term neurological deficits, such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, learning impairment and mental retardation. Currently, the therapeutic strategies for attenuating the injury in the clinical setting are limited
The aim of our study was to evaluate serum level of NGB in hypoxic ischaemic neonates.
The current study was conducted on 25 fullterm hypoxic neonates recruited from the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), EL-Minia University Hospital, where 13 of them were male(52%) and 12 females(48%), their gestational ages ranged from 37 to 39 weaks (Mean ± SD 37.52±0.71 ) .9 of them were delivered by caesarean section (36%)while 16 of them were delivered vaginally(64%).
The studied neonates were compared to 25 full term neonates 13 of them were male(52%) and 12 females(48%), their gestational ages ranged from 37 to 39 weaks (Mean ± SD 38.16±0.89) and all of them were delivered vaginally(100%).
All hypoxic neonates included in our study were subjected to careful history taking , full clinical examination, laboratory studies, radiological studies
Our results showed no significant difference between study and control groups as regard gestational age , sex distribution and heart examinatin.
Our current study showed that more hypoxic neonates were delivered by C.S.compared to control all of them were delivered normal.
Highly significant higher NGB level in hypoxic ischaemic neonates( Mean ± SD 69.76±17.08) compared to control ( Mean ± SD23.49±6.54 )
Our results showed significant difference between two groups as regard , chest examination, abdominal examination and some electrolytes.
Our results showed that hypoxic neonates had low APGAR score more than control ,range of apgar score at 1 min is (3-5) and at 5 min is (5-7) in neonates and in control is (8-10) at 1min and (10-10) at 5 min. hypoxic
Our study showed that fits is the most frequent neurological finding in HIE and its percentage.
