Abstract

One of the major concerns in Egypt is to improve operation and management of the existing irrigation canals networks. Unsteady-flow simulation models are important tool for predicting water levels and discharges at any specific location and at any time. Most of the available commercial models nowadays are closed boxes. The objective ofthe present study is to develop an open-source model ”IRCS”, for simulating unsteady-flow in a single channel, using MATLAB code. The implicit, finite difference Preissmann scheme is utilised for this purpose. Different boundary conditions are introduced such as gates, weirs and off-takes. The channel may have different longitudinal slopes, cross sections and roughness along its length. 1RCS results for several applications have been compared with those of ISIS software and other literatures and differences are found to be acceptably small. Water losses over the DIS escape weir during irrigation period are investigated for a typical distributary canal with rotational water managernent.: Also, water distribution adequacy for the canal off-takes are studied. Unsteady flow in the non-prismatic, badly deteriorated EI-Tashween branch canal, located in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate has been successfully simulated by 1RCS.
