Abstract

The Upper Bahariya reservoir has large amounts of shale comparing with the Lower Bahariya reservoir. The main purpose of the present study is obtaining the geologic setting of the Upper Bahariya reservoir which is a target for exploitation in Abu Gharadig field. An integrated 3D geological model for the reservoir rock is defined. The lithology of the Upper Bahariya Formation is interpreted as sandstone cemented by argillaceous and/or calcareous materials, siltstone, shale and minor limestone inter-beds. The resulted petrophysical parameters of the studied reservoir indicate its good quality. The Upper Bahariya Formation is subdivided into lower, middle and upper lithofacies. The structural model declares that the studied reservoir was folded into doubly plunging anticline dissected by E-W to NW-SE normal faults. The fold exhibits sigmoidal shape due to rotational stress. Rapid lateral and vertical variations in facies are noticed. The petrophysical models indicate the direct relationship with facies changes. The calculated original hydrocarbon in place using the 3D model of the studied reservoir measured 213×104 bbl. The most promising areas through the studied reservoir are located in the central, southeast and southwest sectors of the study area. So, for future development, it is recommended to focus on these sectors.
