Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of short implants in the posterior maxilla and the posterior mandible using the Periotest®M.
Research hypothesis:
There is no difference in the stability of short implants placement in the posterior maxilla if compared to the posterior mandible.
Formulated question:
In partially edentulous patients will short implants be of the same stability when placed in the posterior maxilla of compared to the posterior mandible?
Trial design:
Parallel groups, non- randomized controlled clinical trail
Sample size
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the stability of short implants in the posterior maxilla and the posterior mandible using the Periotest®M with 1 control per experimental subject. In a previous study published by (Oh & Kim 2012) the response within each subject group was normally distributed with standard deviation 2.6. If the true difference in the experimental and control means is 2.8, we was need to study 15 experimental subjects and 15 control subjects to be able to reject the null hypothesis that the population means of the experimental and control groups are equal with probability (power) 0.8. The Type I error probability associated with this test of this null hypothesis was 0.05
