Abstract This research paper examines some aspects in the economics of tobacco in general and cigarettes in specific in Egypt. This include taxation, manufacturing, and tobacco control policies, with price and income elasticity of demand to be estimated. In the first part, it describes, in brief, the structure of cigarettes in Egypt and the level of imports and exports. The second part analysis the tobacco consumption in general with concentrating on cigarettes in specific using the per capita cigarettes consumption data for the period (1990 - 2009 ). The adult smoking prevalence accounts for 35% for adult males and only 1.6% for adult females, giving an overall adult smoking prevalence of 18.5%. The third part examines the demand function for cigarettes, with the income and proce elasticties of demand are estimated. In addition, some economic issues related to cigarettes are discussed in this part which includes the structure of cigarettes taxes in Egypt and the impact of changes in cigarettes taxes would have on cigarette consumption and government revenue. A simulation analysis is conducted to examine the impact of changes of cigarette taxes on government tax revenues and cigarette consumption. |
