Abstract Self-harm is an adolescent phenomenon, Self-harm refers to the intentional, purposeful, and socially unacceptable infliction of bodily harm without suicidal intent. Also known as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), it is a puzzling, disturbing, and often poorly understood behavior prevalent in all cultures and across all socioeconomic levels. Self-harm is often misunderstood and young people may feel stigmatized and ashamed. It does affect all age groups, but studies have consistently shown a peak in mid adolescence. The majority of people who self-harm are aged between 11 and 25 years. It is also a critical public health issue. It reflects and creates emotional distress. Study design: A cross sectional, descriptive study. Patients: there were 235 out of 261 patients had self-harm. Comparing between self-harm group and no self-harm group revealed: There was statistically significant difference between groups (P=0.010) according to marital status. The self-harm group had significantly higher rates of medical history (p=0.003), psychiatric history (p=0.010) and psychiatric treatment (0.044). Conclusion: patients with self-harm is more in females than males. Illiterate patients are more than educated ones. Past medical, surgical and psychiatric treatment are reported with self-harm group. The mild severity is the commonest one. Self-neglect pattern is the commonest pattern. |
