Regarding p16 gene methylation status, HCC patients showed a significantly higher methylation frequency (26/30) when compared to the control groups (0/20). Also, serum AFP level was significantly higher in HCC patients (median=220 ng/ml) when compared to pathological and healthy control groups (median =2.9 and 1.3 ng/ml respectively).
Comparative studies between the different Barcelona stage subgroups of HCC patients revealed that there was no statistically significant difference as regard p16 gene methylation status (p>0.05). While, serum AFP level was significantly higher in stages B and C when compared to stage A (p<0.01).
