Abstract

Renal ischemia/reperfusion injury is a common clinical problem that encountered in renal transplantation, nephron-sparing surgery, renal vascular surgery and aortic cross-clamping for abdominal aortic aneurisms. It is a major cause of acute renal failure. In kidney transplantation, I/R injury is a common cause of renal cell death, ARF, delayed graft function and renal graft rejection. Ischemia reperfusion injury is a multifactorial complex process which includes ATP depletion, accumulation of intracellular Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS), proinflammatory cytokine production and apoptotic pathway activation. ROS are involved in tissue damage that occurs following I/R, and their role in the pathophysiology of I/R injury is supported by the increased formation of lipid peroxidation and other toxic products that occur following such an injury.
