Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence refers to the period of transition from childhood to adulthood, during this period the young person becomes sexually mature and establishes an identity as an individual apart from the family.
The transition from childhood to adolescence is characterized by important biological, cognitive, emotional and social changes. The adolescence is a time for the development of substance use problems. This period is heavily marked by the onset of and progression through puberty, greater autonomy and less self-regulation.
Aims: To detect the coping processes used by adolescents with substance abuse disorder. To detect personality profiles of adolescents with substance abuse disorder. To correlate the personality profiles with substance abuse severity. To correlate coping strategies with substance abuse severity.
Mythology:
A- Study design: It was a case control study.
B- Site of the study: The study was carried at the out patient clinic of Helwan psychiatric hospital in period(September 2016–December 2016), Helwan psychiatric hospital is located in south of Cairo ,in it there is a department for adolescents with Substance Use Disorder and outpatient clinic for them.
Results:
Recruitment of the sample: All over the study period 50 adolescents with substance use disorder fulfill the inclusion criteria and compared to the control to participate in the study. Data was presented and suitable analysis was done according to the type of data obtained we have 8 sections.
Conclusion: Adolescents without substance use disorder can cope better than those with substance use disorder
Adolescents with Border line, Antisocial, Negativistic, and Depressive personality traits are more prone to substance use disorder that other adolescents.
Recommendations: We need to ensure that every Substance use disorder (SUD) adolescent patient gets a thorough, extensive full clinical examination, where his/her mental health status is also assessed to make sure we manage any underlying personality disorder effectively, which in turn would improve the prognosis of the SUDs.
