Abstract

Violence against nurses is a global phenomenon, occurring every continent, country and culture. It is not only occurring in the workplace, but also in the nursing schools as well. It is an issue that has received widespread attention, but no real solutions have been found to combat this problem. The growing problem of violence in nursing schools has been a cause for concern in the twenty-first century.
Nursing is considered as one of the most sacred profession in the world. Despite it is not without great challenge that the nursing profession is faced with addressing the phenomenon of bullying, not only in the health care workplace but also in nursing education. Bullying in nursing teaching-learning environments remains an important issue in need of attention. Acts of bullying can be disruptive and harmful to individuals and institutions. However, nursing students historically represent one of the most vulnerable health care groups.
Nursing students are socialized into the culture of oppression they may have been victims of bullying, although they often become the bullies as they gain power and status within the clinical settings. When nursing students in a practice setting encounter bullying, their approach to practice, as well as their intent to become a nurse, can be influenced and they feel powerless to change the culture, and they see bullying as antithetical to the principles of caring that they learned in school, often leave the profession within their first few years of practice. This study was undertaken to examine the state of bullying in clinical nursing education and its effects on self-esteem of nursing students enrolled in the first and second years of study in all secondary Technical Nursing Schools affiliated to Aswan Governorate.
