This thesis aims at discussing family relationships in the American society and highlighting the impact of family relationship, suicide, and politics on the characters in Hellman’s plays. Her plays The Children’s Hour, The Little Foxes, The AutumnGarden, Watch on the Rhine and Toys in the Attic portray a mature and realisticimage of how evil and moral decay can ruin society to the deep. It also examines The prevalence of gossip, lies, and corruption which society impose upon the workingclass in the twentieth century. She employs many techniques in order to convey her. Message effectively. Hellman’s plays are intensely realistic, reflecting importantmoral and social issues. They reflect a deeper understanding of the complexities. American society has witnessed a time of rapid and devastating change both socially and economically. Dramatists have adopted several and various perspectives to analyze and to find solutions for the problems. So, drama, at their hands, has become a powerful weapon to attack and purge the society of its evils. Although major playwrights like Clifford Odets, Elmer Rice, Robot Sherwood, and Maxwell Anderson who belong to this era have used the theatre as a powerful vehicle of communication to convey a message to people and have been able to prove their artistic talents, at the same time, Lillian Hellman has managed to prove herself among such a multitude of great authors. The result is a drama which playwrights such as: Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, whose works first arrived on the professional stage in the 1940’s, but whose youth and early writings, are clearly formed in the decade of the depression. Lillian Hellman is considered America’s number one woman playwright .When she enters the theatre, she is able to fulfill the expectations of the audience.
