Abstract

This study deals with the historical sources, in which Truga is mentioned. However, most of these sources are dated to the Greek, Coptic, and Islamic periods. Moreover, the greek, roman and, coptic inscriptions are considered to be important sources for Truga as an ancient town in these periods. In the Islamic period, Truga was an ancient town where some of major events occurred especially in the Fatimid, Mamalik periods as Truga was a place for these events. The second part of the chapter speaks about the historical research of Truga town which is conducted by many famous historians and archaeologists. In fact, the research began from the late nineteenth century up till the recent excavation which stopped in 2013 due to security problems in Egypt in the recent years.
Chapter one displays the importance of Truga as a well–developed town in the ancient periods, a town with all its supplies in which it included a well administrative system. It had a significant agricultural system as well as the religious system. People from all eras have lived in it; the Greeks, Romans and Arabs besides the presence of the Egyptians who are the original inhabitants. These historical sources have witnessed the eye spot of the enemies of Egypt as Truga seemed to be an entrance to the whole of Egypt through its connection to Alexandria by Mareotis Lake. As for the history of research, most of these searches and excavations depicted Truga as a unique ancient town in its archaeological finds which reveals a developed progressive town in ancient times.
