Abstract

difference upon identity The research explores the influence of culture and cultural and self- definition in the selected works of Gish Jen’s Typical American and Mona in the promised Land, David Wong Louie’s The Barbarians Are Coming, and Amy Tan’s The Bonestter,s Daughter. The comparative study analyzes the selected novels in the light of Homi Bhabha’s theory of ”otherization” and the third space ” in addition to the ” exile” theory of Edward Said. The second generation Chinese American Writers try to identify with their second generation Chinese American Protagonists leading a torn life between the heredity of the Chinese ancestors and the American hegemonic culture . The research includes an introduction , four chapter’s a conclusion and a bibliography. The introduction gives a background BOUT THE Writers of the selected fiction in addition to the objectives of the research.
Chapter One tackles the Chinese immigration to the Promised land in order to attain the illusive American Dream on the part of the first generation Chinese American protagonists Yifeng Chang,LuLing Young and Lung in Typical American; The Babarians Are Coming; and The Bonesetter’s Daughter, respectively.The novels are analyzed through Homi Bhabha’ theory of culture and Edward Said’s theory of ” exile” to focus on the impact of cultural dislocation and disharmony upon the protagonist’s identity reformation.
In chapter two, the past experiences of the first generation Chinese American protagonists in China are examined in The Bonesetter’s Daughter, The Barbarians Are Coming and Typical American .This chapter displays the heroic deeds of Luling Young and Precious Auntie in The Bonesetter’s Daughter and the miserable American life of Lung in The Barbarians Are Coming to celebrate the immigrant parent’s sacrifice for their offspring .
Chapter three focuses on the dilemma of the second generation Chinese American protagonists Mona Chang,sterling Lung and Ruth Young in Mona in the promised land; The Barbarians Are Coming; and The Bonesetter,s Daughter concerning their inner conflict and their exilic status according to Edward Said’s theory of inner and physical exile due to the protagonists’ inability to decide which traditions to follow. It also clarifies how the protagonists discarded their parents’ values for a new cultural identity . The philosophy of Transnationalism is dealt with through the protagonist Mona Chang In Mona in the promised land to exemplify how Asian A mericans have double consciousness regarding Chineseness of parents and Americanness of the way they were brought up.
Chapter four traces the assimilation of the second – generation Chinese American protagonists Mona Chang, Sterling Lung and Ruth Young in The Barbarians Are Coming,The Bonesetter’s Daughter and Mona in the promised Land regarding the change they experience in order to adapt to the new life. In HANDLING This point, the research draws upon the reconsideration and the significance of Multiculturalism on the part of Mona Change in Mona in the promised land.
