Abstract

The present study was carried out in a governmental dairy farm in Qena governorate – Egypt during the period from February 2013 to April 2014. This farm contains 600 pure Holstein Friesian dairy cows. This study aimed to investigate incidence of different types of postpartum anoestrous and to evaluate some biochemical blood parameters. As well as, evaluation of certain protocols adopted for treating such traits.
The material of this study involved 300 cows picked up from the farm records which were anoestrous since 200 days after calving .These animals were subjected to two rectal examination & blood sampling at ten days interval. Based on the rectal findings and progesterone profiles, the studied animals were grouped into,
those suffering from inactive ovaries, those having CL persistent on their ovaries and those revealing subestrous.
Among these anoestrous cows, ninety animals representing the three investigated classes were subjected to different treatment protocols. The treatment design for inactive ovaries (n=50) comprised CIDR plus PGF2α (n=15), Ovsynch (n=15) and lugolʹs iodine solution (n=15) .Meanwhile , persistent CL group(n=15) as well as silent heat (n=15) received one injection of PGF2α followed by receptal after 48 hours .In addition , biochemical analysis of some blood constituents as total protein, albumen, urea, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus,
copper, zinc as well as AST enzyme were evaluated.
The obtained results revealed the following :-
i. Incidence of different types of postpartum anoestrus in the studied Holstein
Friesian cows:-
Out of 300 postpartum anoestrous Holstein Friesian cows, 144 (48%) were
true anoestrous, 96(32%) had persistent corpus luteum and 60 cows were subestrus.
ii. Metabolic blood profiles of postpartum anoestrous Holstein Friesian cows
before and after different treatment protocols:
• Metabolic blood profiles of postpartum true anoestrous cows :
Serum levels of total protein, albumin and urea showed significant differences between different treatment protocols and controls before treatment, during oestrus and 21 days post mating. Before treatment, total protein levels averaged 5.72±0.05 gm/dl compared to 7.25±0.1 gm/dl during oestrus and 7.81±0.13 gm/dl 21 days post mating. Between different treatment protocols, the corresponding figure showed 7.2±0.2 gm/dl as an average total protein levels in CIDR and Ovsynch treated groups compared to 6.9±0.13 gm/dl in lugol´s treated group and 5.55±0.07 gm/dl in controls. Albumen levels were 3.23±0.07 gm/dl before treatment, 3.83±0.06 gm/dl during oestrus and 5.12±0.14 gm/dl 21 days post mating. Between different treatment protocols, the corresponding figure showed 4.7±0.18 gm/dl as an average albumen levels in CIDR treated group, 3.9±0.16 gm/dl for ovsynch treated group, 3.8±0.1gm/dl for lugol´s treated group compared to 3.5±0.06 gm/dl in controls. For urea, the corresponding figure were 45.84 ± 0.12 gm/dl before treatment, 37.6 ± 0.5 gm/dl during oestrus and 34.36 ± 0.64 gm/dl 21 days post mating. Between different treatment protocols, the figure was 38.7 ± 0.89 gm/dl in CIDR treated group, 38.48 ± 0.84gm/dl in Ovsynch treated group, 38.34 ± 0.84
gm/dl in lugol´s treated group compared to 46.12 ± 0.16 gm/dl in the controls.
