Abstract

Adolescents and young adults’ patients with Congenital Heart Disease face a particular challenges and concerns beyond cardiology like psychosocial issues, emotional difficulties, educational delays, physical disability, sexuality and they struggle to adjust with these issues in their daily life. Aim: the study aimed to assess the Psychosocial Adjustment among adolescents and young adults with congenital heart disease through: Identifying the psychosocial problems which facing them and assessing the psychosocial adjustment patterns among them. Study design: A descriptive design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: the study was conducted at Outpatient clinic in Cardiology Department at Ain Shams University Hospitals. Subjects: A convenient sample of 63 patients was selected. Data collection tools: 1) Interview questionnaire including the following: A) Socio-demographic characteristics of patients, family & illness history, B) Psychosocial problems questionnaire C) Psychosocial adjustment patterns questionnaire 2), Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), 3)Disability Assessment Schedule (DAS), 4) Beck Depression Inventory, 5) Taylor Manifest Anxiety scale (TMAS). Result: More than half of CHD adolescents and young adults’ patients had moderate adjustment and approximately half of them had little used avoidant adjustment patterns, while more than two thirds of them had much use seeking support and active patterns. Conclusion: CHD adolescents and young adults had moderate psychosocial adjustment with much higher levels of depression and anxiety, and they used avoidant, seeking support and active adjustment patterns with convergent rates. Recommendation: Developing an awareness programs for nurses regarding physical, psychological, social and spiritual support enable them to deal with adolescents and young adults with CHD to enhance their psychosocial adjustment.
