Abstract

A total of 1600 slaughtered animals (400 each of buffaloes, cattle, sheep and camel) were inspected at abattoirs of Giza Governorate for macroscopic Sarcocystis during routine post-mortum examination. Samples from the eosophagus, diaphragmatic muscles and intercostal muscles of the previously examined animals (1200 samples from each animal) were examined microscopically by two different methods (impression and digestion techniques) then applied histopathological examination for positive samples for confirmation.
In addition to 80 meat products (20 from each of minced meat, beef burger, butcher’s sausage and fresh oriental sausage) were examined at the laboratory for detection of microscopic Sarcocystis by digestion technique.
The overall incidence of macroscopic Sarcocystis in male, female, young and old buffalo were 29.67 %, 34 %, 43.34 % and 48.67 % while the microscopic Sarcocystis were 51 %, 53 %, 60% and 68.67 % respectively. Macroscopic Sarcocystis in male and female cattle were 22.67 % and31.67 %. While the incidence in young and old cattle were 23.34 % and 33.67 %. Moreover the microscopic Sarcocystis were 34.67% and 42 % in male and female cattle respectively. while its incidence in young and old cattle were 29.67 % and 46.34 % respectively.
The incidence of macroscopic sarcocystis in male, female, young and old sheep was 13.67%, 14%, 9.67% and 16 %. While the microscopic Sarcocystis were 17.67%, 19 %, 19% and 28.67% respectively.
Neither macroscopic nor microscopic Sarcocystis were detected in examined camel carcasses.
The highest percentage of both macroscopic and microscopic Sarcocystis was detected in the esophagus of buffalo, cattle and sheep.
It was noticed that the high prevalence of sarcocystosis was recorded in old animals than young one and this may due to long exposure for parasite
It was noticed that the prevalence in female species higher than in male within the same species this attributed to low immunity in female than male during pregnancy and lactation periods.
The high percentage was recorded in buffalo then cattle and finally sheep.
The incidence of Sarcocystis in meat product were examined 45% for beef burger, 60% for minced meat, while it was 35% for fresh oriental sausages and finally 25% its incidence in butcher’s sausages.
from all the previous results it was recommended that:
1/accurate examine of carcasses in abattoirs.
2/apply microscopic examination for confirmation.
3/eliminate condemned parts or carcasses of positive sarcocystosis with hygienic measures.
4/ Avoid eating raw or improper cooked meat and meat products or keep them at frozen temperature for at least 3-5 days before consumption.
5/ precaution should be adapted in abattoirs to prevent dogs and cats from acquiring raw meat crepes.
6/ eliminate of stray dogs of cats to break down the life cycle of the parasite.
