Abstract

Objectives: The nematicidal property of botanicals rich in alkaloids , glycosides or terpenoids as well as commercial bio-agent against Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis infecting cucumber and cantaloupe respectively was conducted under greenhouse and field conditions. Methods and results: Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to assess the impact of certain bio-products and selected botanicals rich in alkaloids, or glycosides or terpenoids on nematode population and plant growth of cucumber and cantaloupe, grown in soil naturally infested with M. incognita and R. reniformis as well as chemical composition and resistance related enzymes. The results include 32 tables and 9 figures. Results revealed that application using two or three components showed better performance than did the single ones. Bio-arc integrated with T. foenum graecum or N. oleander or S. officinalis appeared to be the most effective in increasing plant fresh weight and reduce total root knot nematode population under greenhouse condition. Conclusion: Concomitant treatments with B. megaterium and T. album in concomitant with T. foenum graecum or P. granatum (alkaloid plants) or N. oleander (glycoside plant) or S. officinalis (terpenoid plant) showed the highest increment in plant fresh weight of cucumber and cantaloupe as well as the highest reduction of nematode population under field conditions. Chemical constituents viz. nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were significantly increased in leaves of cucumber treated with concomitant treatments using three components. Similar trend was noticed with chlorophyll a, b and a+b.
