Abstract This thesis presents an environmental and energy integrated process design for styrene production. The design methodology takes into account both the economic and environmental considerations. It is required to produce styrene monomer. The capital cost based on the “base case” is estimated to be 134 million USD without optimization and heat integration while the optimum and integrated case cost is found to be 222 million USD. The calculated cost of styrene per ton applying “base case” and “integrated case” was found to be 1,337 USD and 1,275 USD respectively while the market price is 1,520 USD. Atmospheric CO2Emiss from boiler (ton CO2/ ton styrene) in “base case” and “integrated case” were estimated to be 1.145 and 0.941 respectively with improvement of 17.8 %. Furthermore, the optimization and integration result in reducing the utilized energy due to reduced consumption of steam by 75 % and cooling water 34%. |
