Abstract Apple is one of the most important deciduous fruit trees in Egypt. The common cultivated apple belongs to Malus domestica, Borkh, family Rosacea. Commercial production of apples in Egypt has been developed after introducing low chilling cultivars from USA in 1979 such as ”Anna”, ”Dorsett Golden” and others. Anna apple is the most adaptable and acceptable of all introduced cultivars. Anna cv. is hybrid between Red Hadassiya and Golden Delicious. Anna apple is a summer maturing variety (Eliwa et al., 1999) and under the Egyptian conditions, its maturity and ripening occur during a hot and dry summer which causes several types of fruit breakdown before and after harvest .e.g. bitter pit, rapid soft and browning, as well as, fruit dropping (Awad et al.,2004 and Leite et al.,2006). Also, because of very hot and dry summer, the duration of fruit cell division stage is short, and consequently small fruits develop (Stern and Flaishman, 2004). |
