Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in Egypt and worldwide. Many factors have been listed as risk factors for this disease. A considerable number of females, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, had a history of other health issues as well. The researcher questioned the correlation of breast cancer risk to a number of selected health problems which are; diabetes, hypertension and obesity. To answer this question (sample 1) of 100 female participant of the Women Health Outreach Program (WHOP) have been recruited in a descriptive study that revealed statistical significance between diabetes, hypertension & obesity to breast cancer risk. Based on these results the researcher designed nursing protocol to promote breast cancer awareness and screening practices. (Sample 2) of 30 female clients from Kasr Al-Aini outpatient clinics have been recruited to conduct nursing protocol to test the suggested nursing protocol. Quasi-experimental research design was used to conduct the nursing protocol. Data of this study were collected through five different tools Bio-demographic data, Health assessment data, Breast cancer awareness assessment, Barriers toward screening practice, and Pre, post and follow-up life style and screening practices data. Piloting of the suggested nursing protocol revealed improvement in knowledge, breast self examination and life style habits among subjects. On the other hand seeking screening services maintained very low. Barriers toward seeking screening services have been studied and analyzed as well. In conclusion there was statistical significance of breast cancer risk to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Moreover nursing awareness protocol promotes life style habits to minimize breast cancer risk and control co-morbidities. Recommendations of the research are; replication of the study on larger probability sample to obtain data that can be generalized, and application of the suggested nursing protocol in different settings and larger sample.
