Abstract

Introduction: Pre-eclampcia is defined as new hypertension presenting after 20 weeks with significant proteinuria which in turn is defined as urinary protein : creatinine ratio is greater than 30 mg/mmol or a validated 24-hour urine collection result shows greater than 300 mg protein. Aim of the Study: To assess the effect of MgSO4 before and after its administration on Doppler ultrasound parameters of fetal umbilical artery (UA) and middle cerebral arteries (MCA) in pregnant women with severe pre-eclampcia. Patients and Methods: This is a prospective observational cohort study which was conducted on 52 pregnant women with clinical and laboratory diagnosis of severe preeclampsia hospitalized at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital during the period from 2014/2015. All women fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Results: As for the umbilical artery PI, there was a statistically significant decrease after 20 minutes of administration of loading dose of MgSO4 and as for MCA, there was a statically decrease in RI PI and PSV. Conclusion: The use of Mgso4 as maternal cerebral porphylaxis is one of the essential treatment protocols in severe preeclampcia cases. Its effect on the fetal blood flow has a very beneficial role till now. In this study it was found that it has significant effect on MCA PI, RI and EDV as well as UA RI. More studies with larger cohorts are needed to support these results.
