Abstract This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of adolescent females regarding reproductive health. Descriptive study carried out at technical institute of nursing, Ain Shams University and faculty of Nursing Ain Shams University. Purposive sample, 190 adolescents female, their age ranged between 17 to 21 years in first academic year. A pilot study was done on 10% of total sample size (19) student under study to evaluate applicability and reliability of the constructed tools. Data collected within 5 months from September 2015 until January 2016 in the first academic semester. The data had been collected by using Selfadministered questionnaire sheet to assess personal data of studied sample and knowledge related to reproductive health issues and likert attitude scale to assess student’s attitude regarding reproductive health issues. The results of present study revealed that: - Total knowledge score of adolescent (65.8%) had satisfactory knowledge and (34.25%) of them had good knowledge. The overall score of adolescent’s attitude toward RH revealed that 100% had positive attitude. - There were a statistically significant difference between age, religion and knowledge about RH. In addition, there were highly statistically significant difference between residence, marital status, family size and knowledge about RH. - There were a highly statistically significant difference between educational level of the mother, Father’s occupation and knowledge about RH and also there were statistically significant difference between educational level of the father and level of knowledge about RH. - On the other hand there were highly statistically significant relations between educational level of the mother, father’s occupation and total attitude about RH. Also there were statistically significant relation between residence and total attitude about RH. There was statistically significant positive correlation between knowledge total score and attitude total score.The presented study concluded that: Nearly two thirds of studied sample had fair knowledge, more than one third of them had good knowledge about reproductive health aspects and all of them had positive attitude toward reproductive health issues. Recommendations Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested: 1-Develop reproductive health educational programs targeted to adolescents and involve adolescents in the design of reproductive health programs to ensure its validity in satisfying their needs and to motivate them. 2- Establishing teaching courses to teachers in nursing schools, institutes and faculties to enable them to tackle the ―sensitive‖ reproductive health issues delivered to adolescent girls and putting this section as the first part of the curriculum. 3-Further researches are needed to aassess effect of parentadolescent communication on adolescent reproductive health matters. 4- Further researches are needed to investigate adolescents’ barriers for utilization of reproductive health services. |
