Abstract In this study, a total number of 343 animals (equine) were involved during the period of 2014-2015 where 159 animals were submitted for bacteriological examination and 184 animals were submitted for sero-diagnosis of Strangles. In 2014, the rate of isolation from nasal swabs of apparently healthy foals was 25%, the rate of isolation from nasal swabs of infected foals was 75% and it was 50 % from contact mares. While, in 2015, the rate of isolation from nasal swabs of apparently healthy foals was 27.3%, the rate of isolation from nasal swabs of infected foals was 37.5% and it was 15.4% from contact mares. Most examined isolates of S. equi subsp. equi were resistant to all antibiotic discs used except 48 isolates were sensitive to penicillin G and 47 isolates were sensitive to ofloxacin. Sera of horses during the period 2014-2015 using commercial ELISA kits revealed that 47.8% of serum samples were positive for strangles and 52.2% of serum samples were negative. The rate of positive results for indirect ELISA in 2015 using commercial kit was 63.04% and with prepared SeM antigen was 55.43%. |
