Abstract In view of the fact that researches concemmg the • biodegradation of herbicides by actinomycetes are somewhat limited, the present work was conducted to study their role in biodegradation of Sencor and Basta herbicides which are widely used for weed control in Egypt. Results could be summarized as follows:- !. A numbr of I 00 actinomycete isolates were isolated from rhizosphere of different crops previously treated with pesticides. 2. Tolerance of these actinomycete isolates to Sencor and Basta herbicides together with their abilities to utilize Sencor as a sole source of carbon and/or nitrogen were tested. Only 9 out of the 100 isolates were able to utilize the Sencor herbicide as nitrogen source. 3. Testing the biodegradation abilities of these nine isolates in-vitro revealed that they differed greatly in the number of degradation-products produced from Sencor. Number of • compounds varied from one to five depending upon the isolate used. |
