Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the effect of different levels
of green and dried coriander on serum glucose, lipid
profile, kidney functions, liver enzyme activities and
histopathological examination of liver in diabetic rats.
Forty-eight albino rats weighing (200 ± 10 g.) were
divided into two main groups; the first group (6 rats) fed on
basal diet (NC) and the second group (42 rats) was treated
with 150 mg alloxan /kg body weight to induce diabetes.
After two days serum glucose determined in all rats to
insure the induction of diabetes. Then the second main
group was divided into seven groups. As follow group (1)
fed on basal diet as a positive control group (PC). Groups
(2&3) fed on diet containing 1 % green coriander and
coriander seeds, respectively; groups (4&5) fed on diet
containing 3% green coriander and coriander seeds,
respectively. And groups (6&7) fed on diet containing 5%
green coriander and coriander seeds, respectively. Results
indicate that, serum glucose total cholesterol, triglycerides,
low and very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, AST,
ALT, uric acid, urea nitrogen and creatinine were elevated
in the positive control group (PC). Feeding diabetic rats on
diet containing some levels from green coriander or
coriander seeds improved total cholesterol, triglycerides,
LDL-c, HDL-c, VLDL-c, AST, ALT, uric acid, urea
nitrogen and creatinine, specially (at high level). In
conclusion, the present results indicated that the most
effective treatment was observed with green and dried
coriander received at high level.
