Abstract

The prevalence of overweight and obesity had a dramatic increase in their incidence in the last three decade, which prompted WHO to label obesity as a global epidemic disease. Overweight and obesity affect self esteem, body image and it is well-known that persons who are overweight or obese are at an increased risk for psychological disorders (WHO, 2014)..

Statistics issued by the Egyptian Medical Association for the Study of Obesity in early 2010 estimate that 15 percent of Egyptian (school-age) children are obese, in comparison with its 1990 estimate of only six percent. Being overweight or obese is determined according to Body Mass Index--with varying measurements for the different age groups and genders (WHO, 2014).
Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for various chronic health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis and certain cancers. These conditions not only lead to reduced quality of life given their protracted nature, they also lead to premature death (Campbell, 2011).
