Abstract

The present study involved 70 patients with high grade astrocytoma (43 patients with Anaplastic astrocytoma and 27 patients with Glioblastoma multiforme according to WHO classification 1993). They were referred to Ain Shams University Radiation Oncology department and oncology unit in Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital during the period between August 1999 to May 2000. High grade astrocytoma constituted
3.5% (70/l997) cases of all malignant referred cases.
Their age ranged from 19-67 years old with a mean age of 47 years and male to female ratio of 1.7 : 1 . For majority of patients the duration of symptoms before diagnosis ranged from l-9 months with a mean of 3.15 months. Performance status at presentation was ranged from 60 % -90% according to Karnofsky scale with 74,2% of them had performance staus of
70%. The patients in this study were subjected to surgical intervention with variable extents and also to whole cranial irradiation up to 40 Gray and a boost dose to tlm1or and surroundig oedema for another 20 Gy by conventional fractionation. All patients were randomized to receive temozolornide chemotherapy regimen for 6 cycles .
