المستخلص The issue of ”modernization” is of special interest to social scientists particularly because of the evident differences in various social aspects between developed and developing societies. As a developing country, Jordan has striven to implement developmental programmes, thereby hoping to address serious difficulties in various scientific, economic, political, social and cultural spheres. Amongst the most pressing challenges to be addressed in Jordan’s programmes has been the modernization of its universities since they are the incubators of the professional classes. For well over three decades, Jordanian universities have been in the vanguard of the developmental mission of the country, which included the establishment and staffing of its modem institutions. As has been shown in related studies and as has been debated in various conferences and workshops, Jordanian universities have, nonetheless, been criticized for failing to effectively support development efforts. Tlris study, therefore, aims to address the following issue: how can Jordanian universities be developed to better respond to the requirements of the modernization of Jordan in general? In particular, this study attempts to answer the following questions: 1. What are the theories of modernization which are concerned with development in the Third World? 2. What is the status quo of Jordanian universities and Jordanian society? 3. What are the requirements of modernization as reflected in Jordanian official and non-official documents? |
