Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the ideological impact on the
lexico-grammatical choices made by three translators - both
Muslims and non Muslims- in translating the Qur’an, and more
specifically Al-Baqara Surah. To approach this complex text
type, the present researcher attempted to develop a model to
accommodate the aspects that should be considered while
assessing translation, or more specifically assessing how lexico-
grammatical choices made by translators reflect their ideological
stance. The attempted analyses drew heavily on House’s model
(1997) that focuses on the pragmatic component in translation,
Van Dijk’s (1999) framework of critical discourse analysis
(CDA), and Ramiere’s (2006) model of the classification of
translation strategies that is based on Venuti’ s (1995) conceptual
framework of translation strategies that have ideological
implications. The analyses of both the source language texts
(SL Ts) and target language texts (TL Ts) yielded two important
conclusions: (1) The lexico-grammatical choices in translation
reflect the translator’s ideology and reveal his bias towards his
ideological beliefs; and (2) the strategies used by the translators of
the Qur’an while translating cultural references differ from one
