Abstract

Treatment of schistosomiasis has two directions; prevent or reduce tissue damage in infected individuals and to reduce egg excretion and consequently in community. Chemotherapy is the most effective method for short term control, but alone insufficient to control human pathology. Thus, development of new antishistosomal drug that is efficacious against shistosomiasis is mandatory.
Due to increasing problems of the resistance associated with PZQ, the drug of choice for treatment of schistosomiasis, alternative therapies are being a highly desirable goal; the new trend of treatment is using natural plant extracts as a safe and effective drug is promising.
In the present study, the effects of mefloquine, Echinacea purpurea and their combination as antishistosomal drugs was studied by means of the parasitological parameters, histopathological examination, in-vitro study and scanning electron microscopy.
The current study was carried out on 100 CD-1 laboratory bred Swiss albino female mice of the same sex.
