Abstract The present study was carried out at Department of Botany, Lab of Microbiology and The Nutrition Laboratory and Animal Research Station of Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Agricultural, Menoufia University in order to study the effect of treatments of two different edible mushrooms on three crop residues (rice straw, wheat straw and kidney bean straw) to improve their nutritive value as feed resources for ruminants and possibility of replacing clover hay with treated crop by-products. Sorghum grains were used as a substrate for spawn. The crop residues were pre-treated (boiled, steamed and immersion in H2O2). Inoculation of sterilized substrates was made with planting spawn of pleurotus spp. at 5% w/w on dry basis under aseptic conditions (2.5g per bag) and incubated at 26oC for two and three weeks consequently. The 2nd experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of inclusion of fungal-treated rice straw in sheep ration as a replacement for some of Berseem-hay on digestibility, nutritive value, N- balance and rumen fermentation. Twelve Barki rams were assigned randomly to three similar groups (4 rams each) with an average body weight of 45 kg. Treated rice straw was included in three rations with 50:50% roughage: concentrate ratio at different replacement percentage of clover hay (0, 20 and 40%). Neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were determined. Cellulose and hemi-cellulose were determined by difference. |
