Abstract Trichinellosis is a parasitic infection caused by a nematode belonging to the genus Trichinella. Virtually all mammals are susceptible to infection by one or more species of the genus; however, humans appear to be especially prone to developing clinical disease (Gajadhar et al., 2006). Over the past two decades, the number of outbreaks around the world appear to have increased markedly, reflecting a changing epidemiological paradigm (Dupouy-Camet and Bruschi, 2007). The severity of the clinical course depends on parasitic factors such as the species involved, the number of living larvae ingested, and host factors such as sex, age, ethnic group, and immune status (Bruschi and Murrell, 2002). |
