Abstract

1. To study the degree of presence of child neglect and abuse in the history of patients with depressive disorders.
2. To study the frequency and nature of life events before the onset of illness in patients with depressive disorders.
3. To study the relationship between child abuse and stressful life events on one hand and different variables of illness in patients with depressive disorders.
Parts of Current Study
I. Theoretical Part.
II. Practical Part.
I. Theoretical Part
This part included the review of literature that consisted of the first three chapters of the study as follows:
Chapter (1) It involved overview of depression as major depressive disorder has the highest lifetime prevalence (almost 17 percent) of any psychiatric disorder; It also included historical background in diagnosis of depression followed by risk factors, etiology, course and comorbidity of depression as well as treatment and prognostic factors of depression.
Chapter (2) It illustrated the relation between exposure to child abuse and development of depression in adulthood; patterns of child abuse including physical, emotional, sexual abuse and emotional neglect. It involved factors mediating the relationship between child abuse (psychosocial and neurobiological factors) and depressive disorders.
Chapter (3) It included relationship between stressful life events and depression, suggesting that stressful life events markedly increase the risk of depression. The strength of this association varies considerably which may at least partly be explained by psychosocial characteristics of individuals exposed to such events, three broad perspectives can be chosen when studying stress: (a) The response-based perspective (b) The stimulus-based perspective (c)T he cognitive transactional perspective in addition it involved the ways used to assess stressful life events .
II.Practical Part The practical part of the current study involved the following: Chapter (4): Subjects & Methods Setting of the study
Minia University Hospital ; It provides an outpatient psychiatric clinic service on daily basis. It has specialized weekly outpatient clinic called (Mood Clinic) once weekly.. Regular follow up is done every two weeks or according to severity of patient condition and his/ her individual needs.
